Composition

Artesunate 120 mg \+ Sodium Bicarbonate 5% w/v + Sodium Chloride 0.9% w/v

This is an injectable antimalarial preparation, generally supplied as a kit containing artesunate powder with sodium bicarbonate for reconstitution and sodium chloride as diluent.

- Artesunate 120 mg — rapidly kills malaria parasites, especially _Plasmodium falciparum_.
- Sodium bicarbonate 5% — used to dissolve/reconstitute artesunate powder.
- Sodium chloride 0.9% — used as the diluent according to the product instructions.

Uses

Injectable artesunate is primarily used for severe malaria, including severe _P. falciparum_ infection.

Severe malaria may cause:

- Altered consciousness or seizures
- Severe anaemia
- Breathing difficulty
- Shock
- Kidney problems
- Low blood sugar
- Very high parasite levels

Severe malaria is a medical emergency requiring hospital treatment.

How to Use

This medicine must be reconstituted and administered by a trained healthcare professional, usually by IV or IM injection depending on the clinical situation and product.

The dose is determined primarily by body weight and age, not simply by the 120-mg vial strength.

Once the patient improves and can take oral medication, injectable artesunate is generally followed by a complete oral antimalarial regimen to eliminate remaining parasites.

Do not self-inject or attempt to prepare the injection at home.

Precautions & Warnings

Tell the healthcare team if the patient:

- Has previously reacted to artesunate or related medicines
- Is pregnant
- Has significant liver or kidney disease
- Has other serious medical conditions

An important delayed complication is haemolytic anaemia, which can develop days to weeks after artesunate treatment. Follow-up blood counts may therefore be required.

Possible Side Effects

Possible effects include:

- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Injection-site reactions
- Changes in blood counts

Rare but important complications include delayed haemolytic anaemia and serious allergic reactions.

Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, severe rash, fainting, jaundice, dark urine, or marked weakness.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Artesunate is used when medically necessary for severe malaria during pregnancy. Treating severe malaria promptly is extremely important because the infection itself can be life-threatening.

Storage

Store the unopened components according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reconstituted artesunate has specific stability requirements and should be prepared and used according to the product instructions.
